Bakara is a black woman-owned engineering company focusing mainly on introducing innovative technologies for the upgrade and maintenance of rail engineering assets. This includes rail projects and the design and development of rail components and systems. Bakara is one of the only rail engineering companies in South Africa that undertakes both maintenance and repairs of rolling stock, and the design and manufacture of rolling stock components. Bakara had a 3-year contract to undertake ad-hoc repairs on the passenger fleet of the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (PRASA). The company deployed on-site teams in the Metrorail (Division of PRASA) rolling stock depots in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban. Bakara's scope included the provision of project facilities, telecommunications for the Central Traffic Control (CTC) building and the entire network, the supply of new signal-equipment rooms with security and access control, the layout of the CTC including the supply of the video walls, workstations and architecture, document-management system and site security. Bakara was appointed by Transnet Engineering to supply and commission 62 Glova Rail vacuum-on-demand toilet kits for new luxury passenger coaches designed and built for Botswana Railways. The potential for the product to be used in other industries is being investigated.
