The union, formerly known as the South African Electrical Workers Association (SAEWA), was founded in Cape Town in 1929 as a branch of the Electrical Workers Association of the United Kingdom. During the next decade or so, SAEWA gained recognition as a representative trade union for electrical workers across most economic sectors and obtained official recognition with the Chamber of Mines. Although these new laws ushered in an era of general freedom in the workplace, they did not really consider the rights of minority interest groups, such as recognition for unions that represented specific occupations, trades or professions. Of course, it is unlikely that any of these trade unions will succeed in the long term, but have rather served their purpose to disrupt the organisational activities of legitimate trade unions in the short term which, in turn, will demotivate workers to become unionised, leaving them exposed and exploited in the long term whilst causing irreparable harm to the organisational structures and potential achievements of legitimate trade unions. To be a labour organisation that provides professional services and products to members in a diversity of trades, professions and occupations across a variety of economic sectors and to build relations with other, like-minded organisations both locally and internationally. Often, these members are subjected to a bombardment of telephone calls and letters from debt collectors, and many of them are threatened with legal action and adverse credit bureau listing. In association with The Armani Group, a debt counselling practitioner registered with the Credit Regulator, SAEWA has developed a product that will assist all SAEWA members to manage their personal debt burden effectively, thereby relieving the constant pressure applied by creditors. The members in the Electrical Contracting sector are an exception, however, since membership to the Fund is compulsory through the Main Agreement for the NBCEI. The Equity Labour Law Centre is associated with SAEWA and is a non-profitable Community Service Centre that was established to assist non-unionised workers with advice and representation. The ELLC can provide Team Leaders with a constant stream of leads that can easily be followed up and turned into successful sales. The Electrical Contracting Industry is regulated by the Main Agreement of the National Bargaining Council for the Electrical Industry SA. Workers in this industry who pay the CBL are therefore excellent prospects for membership. The Bargaining Council for the Restaurant, Catering & Allied Industry is a registered bargaining council with jurisdiction over ALL restaurants, fast food outlets and catering firms in the region stretching from Western Area on the western borders of Gauteng to Delmas in the East, and Alberton in the South, to Sandton in the North. The Metal Engineering Industry is regulated by the Main Agreement for the Metal and Engineering Industries Bargaining Council. As a party to this Council, SAEWA is in an excellent position to offer its products and services to workers employed in this industry. for all workers in all industries with South Africa.
